Gate valve is a lift type of valve. The valve closure is a flat barrier(gate) which when lifted allows the flow to pass through the aperture. The valve closure element slides normally into the flow to provide shutoff. Gate valves are used only for isolation operations.

A type of gate valve is: Wedge gate valve

Understanding the Wedge Gate Valve

The limit of pressure which the flat disks can handle limits the parallel disk gate valve applications. In order to provide tighter shutoff in high-pressure operations, a variation of the gate valve called wedge gate valves is used. In this 2 seats are inclined at some angle to the vertical plane. There is a slight mismatch between the seats and the wedge to accommodate for tight shutoff actuator force. There are four types of valve elements in the gate valves: solid, hollow, split, and flexible wedge.

Advantage:

1) Better shutoff capability than other gate valves

Disadvantage:

1) Cannot compensate in seats for temperature variations

About the simulations

The simulation is about a DN 50 wedge edge gate in the fully open condition. Tested for ON-OFF type operation this simulation predicts the pressure distribution around the valve seats. The max gross CV is 52.61 for a full opening. Below are the images of flowlines, velocity, and pressure contour took from the app.
